In the only WCBL game played Saturday night due to widespread rainouts, the Weyburn Beavers and Swift Current 57s combined for 39 runs and 42 hits in a wild affair that ended with the 57s on top, 25-14.
Originally delayed by 30 minutes, the game quickly turned into an offensive showcase. Weyburn jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning and five more in the second, chasing Swift Current starter Nathan Didder after just one inning of work. Ian Heck led the charge for the Beavers with four hits and three RBIs, while Ryan Dauphinee added four RBIs of his own on a 4-for-6 night. Third baseman Trevor Dale added a three-run homer, his sixth of the season.
Despite the early cushion, Weyburn’s pitching couldn’t hold up. After giving up five runs in the third, relievers Ethan Webster and Connor Nipp were tagged for a combined 13 runs over the next three innings. Swift Current’s lineup exploded for eight runs in the seventh, putting the game out of reach. William Henriquez and Luis Ayala each homered for the 57s, while Ayala drove in five runs as part of a three-hit night.
Saturday night’s game would be the only one of the two scheduled on the weekend between the two squads. The scheduled Sunday rematch in Weyburn was postponed due to rain. No date has been announced to reschedule the game.
The Beavers will return to action Tuesday night when they host the Medicine Hat Mavericks at Tom Laing Park.
