The southeast was soaked over the weekend with some high rainfall totals from a system coming through, though Estevan seems to have been spared the worst of it. More northern communities, like Weyburn and Regina, received close to triple the amount of rain Estevan received over the weekend.
Matt Loney, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, talks about the system and what it left over Estevan.
"That organized system that came through over the weekend left some pretty interesting rainfall totals, although the western half of the province was mostly affected by the higher amounts. But Estevan itself had about 8.5 mm recorded, so a decent amount. To the north, a little bit further to the north were, say, Broadview, Regina area in the 20 to 25 millimetre range."
Some substantial rainfalls included 17.3 mm in Weyburn, 25.8 mm in Coronach, 23.8 mm in Regina, 27.2 mm in Saskatoon, and 33.3 mm in Kindersley. Another southern city, Swift Current, saw reduced amounts, with its rainfall coming in at 11.1 mm.
Loney says that the north-south split was very defined by the system.
"I guess the system was just better organized to the north and west, especially over Alberta. So I guess there was a kind of a well-defined line that was organized further to the north and west, and so we had these large discrepancies in the amounts."
Now the Estevan area is working through the end of that system, with Loney saying we may see a few more drops come down.
"There's some very light stuff showing up on radar. It's just a bit of instability that's held over. So we typically see sort of afternoon buildups of cloud and just a slight chance of showers. Just a bit of a gusty wind with that. Kind of a coolish day, high of 18, a bit below normal. Normally, we would see a high around 23 or so."
More rain is expected to come through with an unstable system forming and hitting the southeast starting Wednesday.
