It was a soggy weekend in Cochrane, with the community hit hard by a significant rainfall event that drenched much of southern Alberta.
Crawford Luke, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says the Cochrane area was right in the middle of the heaviest precipitation.
“Cochrane was pretty close to the bullseye for this event,” Luke explained. “We have a station just west of Cochrane, near Highway 1 before Canmore, that recorded 93.7 millimetres of rain. Based on area observations, Cochrane likely saw anywhere from 70 to 90 millimetres.”
Neighbouring Calgary also saw substantial rainfall, with both the airport and Olympic Park stations recording around 70 millimetres. Even higher totals were reported further south, with some areas near Stavely and Pekisko topping 114 millimetres.

While June is historically Alberta’s wettest month, Luke says this weekend’s rainfall was notable.
“This is definitely a memorable rainfall,” he said. “We’ve seen big June rain events before, like in 2022 and 2013, but to have this much fall over just one weekend is significant.”
Environment Canada continues to monitor conditions, but there’s no indication yet of another system of this magnitude on the horizon.
