A sudden and intense rainfall on Friday afternoon briefly flooded the intersection of 50 Street and 51 Avenue in downtown Ponoka.

The heavy downpour overwhelmed the stormwater system, leaving the intersection temporarily under water.

“There was some water accumulation at a downtown intersection, but it receded soon after the rain stopped,” said Sandra Smith, Communications Manager for the Town of Ponoka.

“During major storm events like the one that happened on Friday, roadways are designed to act as temporary storage for water so it can drain away through the stormwater system or until it can drain away through the system and so that's what happened.”

Smith confirmed that no nearby properties were damaged by the flooding.

“This isn’t a recurring issue. It’s not a common happening,” she added.

“If we could control the weather, that would be great, but we don’t. So, we’re hopeful the weather will cooperate once the Stampede starts.”

The Town has its fingers crossed hoping that the rain in the forecast won’t flood the excitement for the Stampede that begins on Wednesday (June 25) or the parade on Friday (June 27).
