Camps are a popular summer destination for children during the two-month break from school. Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS) Humboldt is offering a camp for kids that will give them a chance to identify with themselves.
There will be two series of camp I.G.N.I.T.E (Inspire Growth Nourish Imagine Thrive Empower) that will help inspire children from 10-14.
For female identifying youth, the camp will be from August 11-15. While the camp male identifying youth will be from August 18-22.
BBBS Program Lead Jillina Beaudoin explains the two main pillars of the camp.
“The first one is showing you how to be their fully individual selves, whatever that looks like for them. And the second part is how does that individual fits into the community.”
Beaudoin noted that each of the five days will be themed. “We have our leadership and confidence building. We have our career and life possibilities, self-care, and well-being. We have our culture and diversity day and then of course we have our fun day to celebrate.”
She added that the camps will be based off their go girls and game on programs, which are all about promoting healthy living.
The camps will be open to ten individuals each week and are open to not only Humboldt residents, but youth from communities in the surrounding area. It will begin each day at 9:00am and will run until 4:00pm, with food and snacks provided each day.
A part of the camp will allow each individual to discover about themselves and how they can fit into the community, Beaudoin explains.
“As individuals we live in a community and community is what the individuals put into it. So, it's showing you that, yes, you can still be this individual person and show up however you feel like you would like to show up. But there is a community out there that is there to support you, and you can also be.”
With the Ignite Camps running throughout August, Beaudoin hopes the weather will be cooperative so they can have activities at the parks.
She said there has been dialogue with the Museum about running an activity there as well BBBS will be speaking to other agencies in the communities about other activities.
Spots are limited for the Ignite Camps. Applications can be found at the BBBS of Humboldt Facebook and Instagram pages along with their website.
