Chinook’s Edge School Division celebrates Associate Superintendent Shawn Russell ahead of retirement.

Russell’s career as a teacher began 33 years ago in the Northwest Territories and has included roles in four school divisions.

"He has been a teacher, vice principal, principal, and associate superintendent. Russell arrived in Chinook’s Edge in 2001 and moved into a leadership role in the division office in 2006. He is currently serving as Associate Superintendent of Corporate Services," shared Chinook's Edge

His retirement celebration on June 19 in Innisfail brought together division office staff, school and division administrators, school board trustees, and several retired colleagues.

Former Associate Superintendent Ray Hoppins expressed gratitude for Russell's unassuming leadership style that put people first and his sense of humour. Russell was described as a constructor by Hoppins.

“Shawn never needed credit for his contributions. His legacy is hard work and a strong commitment to Chinook’s Edge. Shawn quietly and effectively guided and mentored so many of our leaders.”

Lisa Baird and Giselle Meyer, Principal and Vice Principal of Penhold Elementary School, noted Russell’s ongoing support for them as leaders.

"Shawn is an important mentor who is consistent and dependable, and believes in people,” says Baird. “While his sarcasm and humour made us laugh, it is his strong relationships that have left the biggest impact.”

Kurt Sacher, former Superintendent, says he is grateful to have worked with Shawn

“He is a friend and has been a trusted colleague. He always told me his opinion without undermining the work. He is intelligent, loyal, and most importantly, he always thinks about the impact of our decisions on people.”

Russell says the highlights of his time with Chinook’s Edge include centralizing technology purchasing, developing guiding principles for division calendars, supporting the growth of aspiring leaders, and advancing evidence-based hiring practices.

"Also known for shaping administrative procedures and policies, and having a direct influence on the construction or renovation of four Chinook’s Edge schools, Russell leaves a lasting impact on the division," shared Chinook's Edge.

The school division has 12 schools in neighbouring communities, including Olds, Mountain View County, Didsbury and Carstairs. Chinook's Edge has a total of 11,000 students across 40 Central Alberta schools.
