An Innisfail teenager is spending some of her mornings and weekends volunteering with Alberta Health Services (AHS).
Elise Kelly, a Grade 10 student at Innisfail High School, has been volunteering for nearly a year and is a friendly face for residents of the Rosefield Centre Continuing Care Home — someone to talk to and play games with.
“When I play some board games with some of the residents, it really brings a smile to their faces and it makes them laugh,” said Kelly.
“And I really like that about the residents — how lively they can be.”
Kelly has set a goal of completing 125 volunteer hours to earn extra high school credits. She is currently halfway there, with between 60 and 70 hours logged, and hopes to reach her target during the summer.
She learned about the opportunity through her mother, who works as a health care aide at the facility. Kelly is also considering a career in the medical field.
“With volunteering with AHS, I figured out that I’d like to be a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or work somewhere in the medical field,” she said. “I think that an LPN would be one of the best fits for me.”
Kelly encourages others to volunteer with AHS, calling it a valuable experience that builds a strong resumé and offers a different perspective.
“It’s just nice to see all the smiley faces, or just to meet new people and have new experiences,” she said.
That sentiment is echoed by Erin Poissant, manager of the AHS Central Zone Volunteer Resources Department.
“It builds a strong foundation for future volunteerism and exposes youth to possible future healthcare careers,” said Poissant.
“We value the unique energy and perspectives that youth bring.”
Poissant added that AHS is always looking for new volunteers.
“Alberta Health Services is looking for individuals who are compassionate, community-minded and eager to make a positive impact on others’ well-being,” she said.
