The City of Red Deer reminds residents of fireworks safety rules for Canada Day.

This Canada Days celebrations usually involve fireworks, and you can't just go lighting them off in your own backyard.

The City of Red Deer is reminding residents to follow local fireworks bylaws to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.

The Fireworks Bylaw regulates the sale, possession and use of all fireworks, including consumer, display and pyrotechnic, within city limits.

A permit is required to discharge any type of fireworks, and only individuals certified by Natural Resources Canada as a Fireworks Supervisor or Pyrotechnician may apply.

To obtain a permit, applicants must also provide written consent from the landowner where the fireworks will be discharged, a description of the event, and a site plan.

For more information on the bylaw, fees, or to apply for a permit, visit www.reddeer.ca/fireworksbylaw.

There is also the reminder to campers and those heading outside Red Deer for the long weekend that fireworks are prohibited in Alberta’s Forest Protection Area without written permission from a local forest officer.

Campers planning to use fireworks in these areas must contact the nearest forest area office in advance.

By following the rules, officials say, residents can help prevent fires and injuries while celebrating Canada Day safely.
