In their last trustee meeting for the school year, the Chinook's Edge School Division Board of Trustees made a number of decisions and wished the graduating class the best of luck last week.
The Chinook’s Edge Board of Trustees wishes to extend its congratulations to the graduating class of 2025. The Board echoed the comments of Superintendent Ryan Sawula, given in his Superintendent’s report at the meeting explained the school division.
Sawula said,“This is a time for students to reflect on their years of growth, perseverance, and learning. We honour not only their academic successes but also the friendships, challenges, and personal development they have experienced. Sincere congratulations to our graduating students as they embark on new beginnings!”
Although the Chinook’s Edge Board has always included trustee and board expenses in its annual budget documents in line with legal requirements, it has now voted to further increase transparency.
"Trustees will have their expenses posted on the division’s website, starting with the 2024-25 school year and moving forward. This will begin in the fall, after a template for sharing has been developed."
Trustee Gord Kerr, Chair of the Facilities and Maintenance Committee, shared key updates from the committee’s May 20, 2025 meeting. The board thanked staff for their efforts and for maximizing the use of available resources.
"Roofing costs have escalated by 50 per cent over the past five years, which exceeds the increase in funding received from the province during the same period. The elimination of the carbon tax is expected to save the division $290,000."
An update on the division's financial situation for the third quarter of the academic year (March to May) was given to the board. The division is operating within the allocated budget for the 2024–2025 academic year, according to Treasurer Nadeem Altaf.
"The Board’s onboarding committee summarized some of the plans being developed for the first few months after the school board election in October. The board is interested in providing support for any individuals who are newly elected as trustees."
The school division has 12 schools in neighbouring communities, including Olds, Mountain View County, Didsbury, Crossfield and Carstairs. Chinook's Edge has a total of 11,000 students across 40 Central Alberta schools.
The next trustee meeting in September 9.
