A professional fireworks show will light up the night at Mitford Park this Canada Day.
The display is scheduled for 10:45 p.m. and is the only fireworks event approved within town limits.
Cochrane Fire Chief Shawn Polley is reminding residents that personal fireworks are not permitted in Cochrane.
“No fireworks without a permit, no discharge of fireworks without a permit within the town of Cochrane,” he says.
Permits are only issued when federal safety standards and professional discharge protocols are met.
“We’ve seen small nuisance fires and debris fallout,” says Polley. “The hazard is actually quite high when you are looking at fireworks not handled by professionals.”
“Even when the fire danger rating is low, there’s still risk of fireworks landing on homes, shrubs or mulch.”
He adds that without proper training, the risk of property damage or injury increases significantly.
Polley says residents who hear fireworks nearby should report them right away.

He says fire crews are always willing to respond and educate.
“Everything starts with a good conversation,” says Polley. “We’re happy to talk one-on-one about safety concerns.”
