The southeast was hit by a pair of thunderstorms last night and early this morning, with lightning and plenty of rainfall coming down. Environment and Climate Change Canada had been watching those systems as they tracked across southern Saskatchewan, tracking from the west to the east.
When they finally hit the Estevan area, Meteorologist Crawford Luke says we managed to miss the worst of it.
"It looks like you didn't quite get as much as your friends in Weyburn up the highway there. They actually had the most in the province with 32 millimetres. Down in the Estevan area, kind of looking like the five to ten millimetre range."
Environment and Climate Change Canada also had an eye on any tornadoes forming as the high-energy system came through.
One did end up forming, but Luke says it didn't do much damage.
"We had a report of a funnel cloud when the storm was further west near Horizon. We don't know of any damage. At the same time as that report, quarter-size hail was also reported. Otherwise, it was this other storm that kind of tracked up to Regina that brought a lot of large hail. So just north of Regina and Lumsden, there was actually five-centimetre hail, so about the size of a chicken egg."
Luke suspects that other heavy hails landed around the Bengough area, but they currently don't have any reports from that section of the province.
The southeast isn't quite done with the storm system yet as another thunderstorm may come to the area this afternoon.
"It's basically looking like another round of the same system. Might end up finding that the worst threat from today ends up being maybe in North Dakota or towards the Manitoba border, but Estevan's definitely not out of the woods. Could be looking at another severe thunderstorm again today."
Heading into the weekend, the Estevan area has a bit more potential rain to get through before the possibility of drier conditions next week.
"It seems like we should get away with a sunny day on Saturday, and then a better chance for showers on Sunday, but then as we get into Monday and Tuesday, Canada Day, it looks like those days should be dry, so hopefully that forecast holds, and we're looking at a fairly nice long weekend in case anyone is taking Monday and Tuesday off."
With another round of potential thunderstorms today, people are reminded to seek shelter if they're caught outside during a thunderstorm.
