The Alberta RCMP is reminding residents to make safe and sober choices behind the wheel this Canada Day.
On average in Alberta, one in five drivers involved in fatal collisions had been drinking before the crash, according to MADD Canada. That compares to about one in 20 drivers in injury collisions.
During the 2024 Canada Day long weekend, seven people were fatally injured in road-related incidents within RCMP jurisdiction, and 101 impaired drivers were removed from the roads.
"Whether celebrating the holiday at the lake or on a patio, always remember you should never operate a motorized vehicle, including boats and off-highway vehicles, if you have been drinking or using cannabis,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “Everyone should be able to make it home safely this Canada Day. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911.”
Drivers are reminded:
-
Impaired driving is dangerous and criminal.
-
Drugs and alcohol impair judgement and reaction time.
-
Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS) is used to detect impaired drivers. Refusing a breath sample can result in criminal charges.
-
Graduated Driver’s Licence holders must follow zero-tolerance rules.
-
Impaired driving laws apply to all motorized vehicles, including boats and off-highway vehicles (OHVs).
-
Always plan ahead: use a designated driver, call a cab or rideshare, or stay the night.
Penalties for impaired driving in Alberta include:
-
Fines of up to $2,000
-
Immediate 90-day licence suspension, with escalating penalties for repeat offenders
-
Vehicle seizure for up to 30 days
-
Mandatory education programs
-
Mandatory ignition interlock for repeat offences
-
Criminal charges in serious cases, such as causing injury or death
The RCMP is encouraging all Albertans to do their part to keep the roads safe this Canada Day.
