The Swift Current U17 Sonic doubled up the Valley Vipers Sunday afternoon on Country 94.1's Local Sports Live to sweep the doubleheader.
A five-run fifth inning for Swift Current propelled them to a 10-5 victory over the Vipers, with Serena Kochan and Taylor Schury each recording two hits and three RBIs for the Sonic.
"Being patient at the plate and letting the pitcher do the work and waiting for their pitch and sitting on it," Sonic assistant coach Alyssa Taylor said, was the key to the fifth inning offensive outburst.
The Vipers scored one in the top of the first inning, but Schury responded for Swift Current in the bottom of the second with a two-run triple, pushing the Sonic up 2-1.
Teams continued to trade runs in the third, as the Vipers tied it 2-2 in the top of the inning before Mackenzie Smith singled home two runs for the Sonic for a 4-2 lead.
The Vipers answered right away in the top of the fourth with two runs, tying the game at 4-4. In her first plate appearance of the game, Anaiah Stechyshyn produced an RBI single for Swift Current in the bottom of the frame, edging the Sonic ahead 5-4.
Swift Current blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth as Brynn Haubruch and Schury each smacked an RBI single. Kochan also had a single, but her's plated two runs, and Bree Pavely brought home the 10th run as she was hit with the bases loaded.
The Vipers would score once in the top of the sixth inning, closing the book on the game's scoring.
"The kids had to battle a little bit more in the second game," she said. "We kind of went to sleep a little bit, but they did the little things and got the W."
Earlier in the afternoon, Kochan, Lyla Thiessen, Haubrich, and Eden Larson powered Swift Current past the Vipers 14-8, each recording multi-hit outings and driving in two runs. Thiessen also had a home run.
