The Cochrane Horticultural Society has made a generous donation to Big Hill Lodge, following the overwhelming success of their annual spring plant sale.

Held outside the Cochrane Public Library, the event drew long lineups before the doors even opened. “We had people lined up all along the sidewalk, east side and Railway Street,” said society director Muriel Wymmobel. “It was a beautiful day, and we were thrilled by the turnout.”

The plant sale, which has grown significantly over the years, was supported by a network of volunteers and local donors.

“People donate plants from their own gardens, and we also get support from local businesses, some donating plants, others mulch or supplies,” Wymmobel explained.

Thanks to this community effort, the society was able to raise $1,400, all of which is being donated to Big Hill Lodge.

“We always pick a local charity that we feel we can make a difference for,” said Wymmobel. “We knew Big Hill Lodge was working on adding a deck, so we reached out and asked what they really needed. Turns out, they could use some outdoor furniture, something that can be enjoyed right away.”

The donation will go toward purchasing new patio furniture for residents to enjoy this summer.

Though the Cochrane Horticultural Society is a small group, Wymmobel says its strength comes from its dedicated volunteers.

“We have some amazing members who work tirelessly behind the scenes. From growing and watering plants to storing and pricing them, it’s a full team effort.”

The group also maintains the library garden and is already looking ahead to their fall fundraiser.

“It’s about building community and making things a little brighter for someone else,” said Wymmobel.
