A local lacrosse team made up of players from Lacombe, Ponoka and Clive has claimed the Central Alberta Lacrosse League (CALL) championship — and they’re not done yet.
The Lacoka Locos U17 team took home the league title as five of their players prepare to move up to junior lacrosse next season.
Head coach Zac Coubrough, who has coached many of the players since their U13 days, said it’s been rewarding to watch them grow.
“I've been blessed to have a pretty solid core group that come back every year,” said Coubrough, who has coached the 2010 age group for several years.
This isn’t his first championship either — the fifth-year coach has won multiple titles with various age groups, including a provincial title at the U13 level.
“Lacombe and Ponoka have a strong lacrosse community — we're pretty competitive in the lacrosse world,” he said.
But the team’s reach goes further. Many players come from Maskwacis, and Coubrough said that highlights the sport’s growing popularity in central Alberta.
“It’s good to bring the communities together, and lacrosse is a good sport for that,” he said.
Next up, the Locos will compete in the U17 B Division at the provincial tournament in Calgary from July 11 to 13.
