Aspire's “Park IT” summer day program returns to Central Alberta for its 20th season.

Aspire Child Development Centre is celebrating the 20th season of its beloved "Park IT" program, a free, drop-in playgroup designed for children with diverse needs, their families, and the community.

Running now through till August 15, "Park IT" travels between Red Deer, Penhold and Blackfalds, offering developmentally appropriate recreational activities that support the unique needs of children with disabilities while welcoming all families who wish to participate.

“Our organization realized there was a gap in summer programming for those families, but the program is open to everybody,” said Tanza Hovelkamp, Aspire's development and operations coordinator, who also coordinates the "Park IT" program. “We actually welcome anyone that happens to see it and wants to attend.”

Weekly programming includes sensory games, physical games, sand toys, crafts, music and story time, all organized around fun weekly themes.

“Next week our theme is bugs and insects!” Hovelkamp shared.

The inclusive and supportive nature of "Park IT" helps reduce isolation for families navigating special needs.

“Families that have children with diverse needs can often feel isolated,” said Hovelkamp. “This is a safe place for families to make connections and build meaningful networks with each other.”

Parents often find that the program is just as valuable for them as it is for their children.

“Parents truly appreciate the program because not only is it a safe place for their child to come and spend time during the summer, but it’s also a supportive and engaging environment for themselves,” Hovelkamp explained.

She noted that participation continues to grow: “The number of people attending the program is increasing and we love to see that.”

"Park IT" runs Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the following rotating schedule:

  • Mondays in Penhold
  • Tuesdays to Thursdays in Red Deer
  • Fridays in Blackfalds

No registration is required, and all ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

"Park IT" fosters an inclusive environment where all children can learn, grow and build friendships.

The program promotes acceptance of individual differences and helps create a culture of respect and belonging.

This year’s "Park IT" program is supported by ATB and the Rotary Club of Red Deer Sunrise.
