The southeast nearly got another taste of tornadoes as a strong thunderstorm moved throughout the southeast and spun the clouds around enough that stormchasers descended into the area. That storm also brought hail that was scattered in a few different sizes across the corridor from Carlyle to Redvers, even stretching into Manitoba.

Dan Fulton, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, took a look at the system that produced some of the extreme conditions.

"We had a very, very powerful storm develop in the extreme southeastern corner of the province, and a tornado warning was issued based on radar. But we actually had some storm chasers on this one. So I don't believe that we actually did see a touchdown, but it was a very strongly rotating storm that could have produced a tornado."

For a hail environment, Canada has received reports of ping-pong-sized hail falling near Manor, with Manitoba communities also reporting Loonie-sized hail and very strong wind gusts.

For residents of the southeast, another tornado would have been a pretty stark reminder of the three tornado touchdowns that we received back in June.

Fulton says that conditions between now and then were different, thanks to the heat and humidity.

"The environment yesterday was very hot and humid, but also, the atmosphere was strongly capped, which means the heat and humidity had a very difficult time actually kind of producing a thunderstorm. But it found an area of weakness, I guess. There was a trough in the area, which sometimes provides enough little extra lift to allow these thunderstorms to develop."

"So it was in the perfect spot there, and that's why there was only one, because really it was, the environment was not really conducive to allowing them elsewhere."

Now that the thunderstorm's gone, Fulton is forecasting the next few days to have pleasant weather for the southeast.
