Lacombe Police Service (LPS) is reminding residents to drive sober this summer, as officers continue efforts to reduce impaired driving on local roads.
This July, LPS is joining police agencies across Alberta in raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving—whether caused by alcohol, cannabis, or other substances.
In 2024 alone, Lacombe police issued:
-
22 Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) Fail penalties, up from 18 in 2023
-
25 IRS 24-hour suspensions
-
1 IRS novice suspension
-
6 IRS warnings
In two serious cases this year, drivers received lifetime driving suspensions after being caught impaired while already suspended for previous impaired offences.
Key reminders from provincial data include:
-
Males aged 20–21 remain one of the highest-risk groups
-
Combining cannabis and alcohol greatly increases risk
-
Edibles take longer to affect the body and last longer—do not assume you’re safe to drive
-
Drug-impaired driving at night is now more common than alcohol
-
Always plan ahead: use a designated driver, taxi or ride-share
Anyone who suspects an impaired driver is urged to call 911 immediately.
Lacombe Police are encouraging everyone to work together to keep local roads safe by driving smart and sober.
