A high school graduating class from 1985 is meeting in Lacombe this Saturday to celebrate 40 years since completing high school.
The Lacombe Composite High School Class of ’85 reunion has been in the works for well over a year, according to Darren Wilson, one of the organizers.
Almost all of the grads have been tracked down through social media, including the creation of a Facebook group that now has nearly 120 members—a number that surprised even the organizers.
“For our age bracket, we were kind of stunned with the amount of people we actually found on Facebook,” Wilson said.
“We didn't think we'd have that much uptake off of Facebook.”
The plan is to host an invite-only gathering at the Lacombe Legion, timed to coincide with Lacombe Days in hopes of drawing people in from out of town. The graduating class had 155 students, many of whom have since spread out across the globe.
“We've got people in Florida, Arizona, England, from B.C. to Newfoundland—people who have lived abroad in Australia and New Zealand for many, many years that are back,” explained Wilson.
But many graduates have remained close to home, with nearly 75 per cent now living within 100 kilometres of Lacombe. Several have become pillars of the community, playing key roles in local organizations and initiatives.
Wilson encourages all members of the Class of ’85 to join in the celebration and reconnect with old friends.
“It's a really good way to connect and see some people that you haven't seen in a while,” he said.
“Some of these people, you just don't bump into in a planned setting—you might run into them but not get a chance to chat.”
