Alberta RCMP are reminding residents to take precautions against theft of and from vehicles during summer activities like camping, hiking, and day trips.
The following tips can help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft:
-
Lock your vehicle – Always lock your vehicle, even while relaxing at your campsite or walking by the water. Thieves often act in moments of inattention.
-
Never leave a vehicle running unattended – A quick stop at the store or bank is all the time an opportunistic thief needs to steal a running vehicle.
-
Keep keys and personal documents safe – Do not leave keys, garage door openers, or documents with personal information in your vehicle. These items can be used to steal your car or gain access to your home.
-
Hide or secure valuables – Store belongings out of sight and secure off-highway vehicles, bikes, and kayaks. Window covers can help conceal your vehicle’s interior.
-
Close windows – Keep windows closed when leaving your vehicle. For RVs, a locked screen door can provide ventilation and added security.
-
Use a hitch lock – Trailer hitch locks can help prevent towing theft.
-
Install motion sensor lighting – Lighting around recreational vehicles can deter criminal activity.
RCMP remind residents that theft can happen anywhere, and prevention plays a key role in community safety.
Suspicious activity should be reported to your local police service. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress, call 911. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com, or through the “P3 Tips” app.
