Fishing has been open for a while in Saskatchewan, with anglers taking the time to float along the province's lakes and rivers, seeing what they can catch.

Mitchell Thorarinson, a fisheries biologist with the Ministry of Environment, talks about the season so far and how anglers have been faring.

"Everything's looking good, I've had no complaints so far, looks like everybody's having lots of luck."

Fish populations seem to be at decent levels, as Thorarinson says they keep an eye on those with evaluations throughout the year.

"All our results from last year showed healthy walleye and other fish populations across the province. We're kind of just getting going with our assessments this year, and everything's looking good so far."

With a new fishing year comes new regulations, which Thorarinson says are easily seen by checking out their new angler's guide for the season.

"If you check the angler's guide, there's a section that says what's new for the 2025-2026 season. One big thing, especially for the Estevan area, is that most bass limits are now zero province-wide. A couple of other small changes to a couple of trout lakes, and yeah, everything's in the angler's guide."

So far, Thorarinson says he's seen a good few people out and about fishing this year, and he hopes to see more as the year goes on.

"We were out doing an assessment a couple of weeks ago, and as soon as school went out, it really seemed to get a lot busier. Lots of people fishing, lots of people catching, which is good."

People looking to get into fishing can do so this weekend without having to buy a license, as Saskatchewan holds its 36th annual free fishing weekend.
