The crowds were cheering at the 136th annual Wood Mountain Stampede, Canada's longest continuously running rodeo, held just south of Wood Mountain in the regional park.

Rhett Fitzpatrick, a past competitor and current board member of the Wood Mountain Stampede, shared his excitement about this year's event.
"It's a full weekend of rodeoing," he said.

We've got every major event, bareback, saddle bronc, and bull riding, plus amateur bronc and bareback riding.

All the timed events are here too: ladies barrel racing, junior barrel racing, team roping, calf roping, and steer wrestling.

Fitzpatrick noted that attendance has been strong.

The crowds have been very consistent. People are enjoying it.
When asked about his Favorite event, Fitzpatrick didn't hesitate. "Saddle bronc is the traditional event of rodeo. "It's here it all started, so that's their Favorite to watch."

But the Stampede is more than just a rodeo; it's the cornerstone of the community. "Wood Mountain Stampede started in 1890, "Fitzpatrick explained.

It's a significant event in our community. People come for the week, they camp, barbecue, and enjoy the rodeo. We've got competitors from Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., and all across Canada, from Quebec to B.C.

Wood Mountain is famous for its brush-covered grandstand and bucking chutes," Fitzpatrick said. "It might be the only one like it in the world."

With its rich history, international draw, and strong community spirit, the Wood Mountain Stampede continues to be a highlight of the summer in southern Saskatchewan.
