Two youths have been arrested and charged with arson and damage to property after a bus bench was deliberately set on fire in Red Deer.

On July 12 at approximately 10:08 p.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to a report of a bench fire on Addington Drive. An investigation by the Red Deer RCMP General Investigation Section led to the arrest of a 15-year-old and a 13-year-old.

Because both are under 18, their names cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The youths were released on undertakings and are scheduled to appear in Red Deer court on Aug. 28.

RCMP are also investigating a series of similar arsons involving bus benches at the following times and locations:

  • May 1 at 5:33 a.m. — 43 St. and 57 Ave.

  • May 1 at 4:23 p.m. — 30 Ave. and 32 St.

  • May 2 at 11:10 p.m. — 50 Ave. and Bennett St.

  • May 8 at 4:42 p.m. — Kerrywood Dr. near Fairview School

  • May 10 at 9:45 p.m. — Kerrywood Dr. and 59 St.

  • June 4 at 4:41 p.m. — Davison Dr. and Dawson St.

  • June 9 at 9:12 a.m. — 22 St. and Inglewood Dr.

  • July 5 at 9:12 p.m. — Avery St. and Addington Dr.

  • July 7 at 3:31 p.m. — Inglewood Dr. and 22 St.

  • July 8 at 4:01 p.m. — Barrett Dr. and Byer Cl.
