There are several ways to support veterans, military members, and first responders through the second annual Feeding the Body, Healing the Mind golf tournament, hosted by the Veteran Hunters.
The 18-hole tournament takes place Aug. 15 at the Water Valley Golf Course, with a shotgun start at 3 p.m. It is open to the public, and organizers welcome more teams and sponsors.
By sponsoring a team or signing up to golf, participants will be helping fund therapeutic outdoor programs for those who serve or have served. Those unable to attend can still contribute by sponsoring a veteran to play for $225.
The goal is to raise $40,000 in support of the non-profit organization’s programs, which operate without federal government funding. The Veteran Hunters provide therapeutic hunting, fishing, and outdoor adventures that focus on mindfulness and peer-to-peer healing.
“Our peer-led programs give veterans and first responders the opportunity for self-discovery and a reaffirmation and validation of who they are,” said founder Todd Hisey, a former Canadian Army officer who served 22 years, including deployments to Bosnia, Kosovo, and Russia.
“These heroes leave the program with a sense of purpose, grounding, self-worth, and a sense of belonging.”
Veteran Hunters also provides access to food for veterans and families, therapy services, and assistance with Veterans Affairs Canada applications and benefits.
Hisey said they’re grateful for support from corporate sponsors such as Sportex Canada, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s. However, more funding is needed to meet rising demand.
“Last year, we had 105 applicants for our program, but we could only put 70 people in the field,” he said. “So, it’s about continuing to raise funds to help offset the expenses our organization and volunteers incur.”
The organization’s flagship initiative, Hunting & Fishing for Heroes, has since expanded to include Ladies Go Hunting & Fishing and Families Go Outdoors programs.
