From grass to growth: Naturalization taking hold in Olds. Website/Town of Olds
Categories

The Town of Olds has begun changing how it manages green spaces and shrub beds by embracing naturalization practices.

Seventeen sites have been identified across the community, and naturalization plans have already been implemented.

Even with a few sites restarted, the initial results have been positive.

The Town says staffing resources have been reallocated to other tasks, and plant growth is expected to support improved soil development over time.

By converting low-use or difficult-to-maintain areas into more natural, self-sustaining landscapes, the naturalization initiative supports Council’s goals of:

  • Environmental sustainability

  • Cost-effective service delivery

  • Enhanced quality of life for residents

Naturalized areas may look unfinished at first but will improve over time.

This is a multi-year process, and each space will be monitored, maintained, and adapted as needed.
