Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of Central Alberta.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon. Some storms may become severe, bringing large hail, heavy rain, and strong wind gusts.

The affected areas include:

  • Clearwater County near Rocky Mountain House and Crimson Lake

  • Clearwater County near Caroline and James River Bridge

  • Mountain View County near Sundre

  • Mountain View County near Olds and Didsbury

Environment Canada warns that fast-moving, rising water can sweep away vehicles and damage infrastructure. Heavy rain may lead to flash flooding and significantly reduced visibility.

Residents are urged to be prepared. If severe weather approaches, take cover in a basement or interior room. If you're outdoors, seek shelter immediately as flying debris and hail can be dangerous.

There is a severe thunderstorm warning for Mountain View County near Sundre.

Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and torrential rain.

This thunderstorm is located 15 km northwest of Bergen and is moving slowly to the northeast.

Heavy rain may cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Fast-moving and rapidly rising water can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure.

Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail.
