Myles Neill, 36, was recently sentenced in Moose Jaw provincial court to six months in jail for a pair of break-ins.

The six-month sentence was agreed upon by the defence and provincial Crown prosecutor Rob Parker.

Parker presented Neill’s past criminal record to the court but noted it wasn’t complete. Neill appeared in court via CCTV from remand as he is currently serving the final year of a 36-month sentence for a home invasion. The six-month sentence will be added to the time he is already serving.

Neill pleaded guilty to two counts of break and enter. The six-month term will run concurrently on each charge. Parker told the court that on Feb. 2, 2024, a shed on Lillooet Street West was broken into and an axe was stolen. The axe was recovered in a garage that had been broken into on Home Street.

Legal aid lawyer Zak Anderson represented Neill. Anderson said Neill has struggled with addictions and, at the time of the offences, was very intoxicated and had little memory of what happened.

Anderson said Neill has been trying to turn his life around since being in jail, including attending Alcoholics Anonymous and Bible study, working as a cleaner at the jail, and working on getting his GED.

Judge Brian Hendrickson accepted the joint submission and commended Neill for taking advantage of his time in custody.

“It sounds like you have been using your time productively,” the judge said.

For pleading guilty, the Crown stayed charges including operating a motor vehicle while prohibited, possession of a weapon while prohibited, unauthorized possession of a firearm, failing to attend court, and failing to comply with a release order.
