The Village of Alix has completed the first two phases of a large-scale dredging project aimed at improving the health and sustainability of its lake.

Phase 1 wrapped up in spring 2024 and focused on clearing organic sediment from the boat launch and swimming areas. That phase removed 10 dry tonnes of material to reduce build-up and improve water quality for recreation.

The more extensive second phase took place over 39 days in May and June, removing more than 3,284 dry tonnes of organic matter from the central area of the lake—roughly the equivalent of 112 full shipping containers.

Mayor Tim Besuijen says the project marks a significant environmental milestone for the community.

“As a council, one of our priorities is to address the health of our lake,” said Besuijen. “While other lakes have posted warnings for blue-green algae, the Alix Lake has been free of blooms for the past two years. We are thrilled with this result.”

Besuijen added that if the village can resolve challenges with pumping water from the Red Deer River—currently impacted by invasive carp—it would be another step toward improving the lake’s overall health.

The dredging work is part of council’s long-term environmental strategy, which also aims to support public access and water quality improvements.

The Village of Alix says the project has benefited from strong community support and the efforts of municipal staff.
