The Ponoka Aquaplex is diving into National Drowning Prevention Week with a series of free activities from now until Saturday, July 26, aimed at raising awareness and promoting water safety skills.

Each year, more than 400 Canadians lose their lives in preventable water-related incidents. National Drowning Prevention Week, led by the Lifesaving Society, seeks to reduce these tragedies by educating the public on how to stay safe in and around water.

To mark the occasion, the Aquaplex (5315 46 Ave.) is hosting several events, including:

  • Free swim and outdoor community barbecue — On Tuesday, July 22, residents are invited to enjoy a free swim and barbecue from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. If it rains, the event will move indoors.

  • Daily “Swim to Survive” skills challenge — During public swim hours, visitors can take part in basic lifesaving skill challenges designed to teach what to do in an unexpected water emergency.

  • Daily pool scavenger hunt — Participants can search for hidden items around the pool during public swim times. Those who complete the hunt will be entered into a prize draw.

These activities are a fun way to build essential water safety skills while encouraging families to enjoy the Aquaplex together.
