A heartfelt tribute to longtime volunteer Kevin Sliva helped kick off the U11 AA and AAA Provincial Championships in Estevan on Friday, as 16 teams from across Saskatchewan gathered for a weekend of baseball and community spirit.

Sliva, who serves as treasurer and head coach of the Estevan Brewers, was recognized during the opening ceremony for his many years of dedication to Estevan Minor Baseball. Known for his willingness to do it all, from coaching and announcing games to managing equipment, Sliva is considered one of the organization’s most dependable and passionate volunteers.

"Kevin does everything," said Estevan Minor Baseball president Mel Murray. "He is one of the most organized and dependable members of our board. He pitches in wherever he is needed. He is one of our best volunteers."

The recognition was especially meaningful for Sliva, who had several family members in attendance, including four of his seven children who currently play ball. He described the honour as an emotional moment and a celebration of how much baseball means to his family.

"We are all at the diamond," Sliva said. "You run from diamond to diamond and just enjoy what you can. You miss the odd thing, but hearing the kids tell the stories afterward, seeing the gleam in their eyes, that is the best part."

A highlight of the evening came when Sliva threw out the ceremonial first pitch, which was caught by his son.

"That was a great honour," Sliva said. "For him to catch that pitch and for me to throw it, it was something special."

The rest of the ceremony was filled with youthful energy as excited players lined up with their coaches and volunteers, while parents and supporters packed the stands. Teams competed in a friendly cheer-off, trying to outdo each other in enthusiasm.

"These little kids give it everything," said Murray. "Everyone was trying to out-cheer each other. It was just nice."

Murray said the strong turnout and support from the community made for an unforgettable start to the weekend.

"It fills the diamonds up and makes it look great for the kids," he said. "They get to see their parents and grandparents cheering them on. It was fantastic."

Estevan Minor Baseball thanked all the volunteers and families who helped bring the event to life and encouraged everyone to come out and enjoy the 18U AA Tier 1 provincial tournament this weekend.
