Surfers from across Alberta and beyond will gather in Kananaskis Country next month for the return of the Mountain Wave Classic, a unique river surfing competition set against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.
Now in its 15th year, the event runs August 23 and 24 at Canoe Meadows on the Kananaskis River, about 40 minutes west of Cochrane.
Organized by the Alberta River Surfing Association, the competition showcases athletes riding a semi-natural standing wave created specifically for river surfing.
Roughly 30 to 40 competitors are expected to hit the water, with men’s and women’s divisions judged on categories like wave entry, flow, style, tricks, and full wave use.

Surfers will compete for top spots and prizes, with heats scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
The Mountain Wave Classic is free to attend, with music from a live DJ and great views from the riverbank. For those interested in trying the sport, local organizations like the Alberta River Surfing Association and Bow Valley SUP & Surf offer beginner lessons and community support.
Registration for competitors is still open online.
