The Moose Jaw Police Service saw a significant increase in crime clearance rates in 2024, while crime severity dropped, according to new data from Statistics Canada. 

The police service dealt with 3,734 actual incidents in 2024, a 4.7 per cent decrease from 3,831 in 2023. However, that number was up from 3,334 in 2020. 

Of those incidents, 141 — or 3.64 per cent — were deemed unfounded. 

Police cleared 1,933 cases in 2024, up from 1,595 in 2023. Of those, 1,746 were cleared by charges and 187 by other means. In total, 1,648 people were charged, compared to 1,362 the previous year. 

Among those charged, 1,555 were adults and 93 were youth. 

Moose Jaw saw a drop in crime severity in 2024. The crime severity index was 103.87, compared to 117.75 in 2023. The violent crime severity index fell 3.77 per cent, from 104.2 in 2023 to 100.27 in 2024. 

The non-violent crime severity index dropped sharply, from 124.14 in 2023 to 106.18 in 2024. No youth-specific data was available. 

The crime severity index measures the seriousness of crimes based on court sentencing patterns. Serious crimes are weighted more heavily than minor offences. 

Clearance rates also improved. The violent weighted clearance rate increased to 76.49 in 2024 from 73.33 in 2023. The non-violent weighted clearance rate rose from 30.1 to 38.71. 

Moose Jaw RCMP statistics remain steady 

The Moose Jaw RCMP reported 251 actual incidents in 2024, up from 239 in 2023 — a 4.81 per cent increase. Of these, 54 were deemed unfounded, or 17.7 per cent of all incidents. 

RCMP cleared 108 cases, similar to 2023, with 65 cleared by charges and 43 by other means. A total of 61 people were charged, including 60 adults and one youth. 

The RCMP’s crime severity index remained steady at 61.14, compared to 61.93 in 2023. The violent crime severity index dropped nearly 25 per cent to 57.66, while the non-violent crime severity index rose from 56.58 to 63.05. No youth data was provided. 

Clearance rates also improved. The violent weighted clearance rate rose from 40.92 to 46.87, while the non-violent weighted clearance rate jumped nearly 26 per cent, from 34.45 to 43.4. 

National crime rates dropped 3.6 per cent, while Saskatchewan’s crime rate fell three per cent. 

Nationally, the crime severity index was 77.9 in 2024. In Saskatchewan, it was 153.9. The national violent crime severity index was 99.9, compared to 198.5 provincially. For non-violent crime, the national index was 69.8, while Saskatchewan’s was 137.3.
