The Swift Current Kal Tire 18U AAA 57s got off to a strong start at provincials on Thursday.
Mason Fauser hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, propelling the 57s ahead, and they didn't look back, beating the Saskatoon Diamondbacks 6-3.
Wesley Olson opened the scoring for Swift Current in the top of the first inning, stealing home. The Diamondbacks tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
Hudson Unger put Swift Current back ahead in the top of the third inning, singling home Jase Johnson. The lead was short-lived as Saskatoon responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning.
Fauser's two-run bomb put the 57s ahead 4-3 in the top of the fifth. A bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth to Johnson and a sac fly from Olson stretched Swift Current's lead to 6-3.
The 57s resume provincials Friday morning against the Moose Jaw Canucks and play in the evening as well against the Saskatoon Cubs. They'll wrap up the round-robin on Saturday against the Saskatoon Giants.
