Rocky View County is urging Bragg Creek residents to immediately reduce their water use due to unusually high flows straining the local wastewater system.

Officials say the system is at risk of being overloaded, which could lead to backups.

Residents are asked to delay laundry and dishwasher use, limit toilet flushing, and keep showers short. Those with sump pumps are reminded they should not be connected to the sanitary sewer system.

Drinking water remains unaffected.

The county says it is investigating the situation and will post updates at rockyview.ca. Questions can be directed to Utility Services at 403-230-1401.

County urges residents to check sump pump connections

Rocky View County is asking homeowners to help keep the wastewater system flowing properly by ensuring sump pumps are not improperly connected to the sanitary sewer system.

The County says it has seen unusually high flows in some areas, and one possible cause is sump pumps that are incorrectly hooked up to the sewer line.

Sump pumps are designed to move groundwater away from a home's foundation—not into the wastewater system. When they're connected to the sanitary sewer, they can overload the system, cause backups, and increase maintenance costs.

Homeowners are encouraged to check that their sump pump discharges outside, well away from the home. If you're unsure, or suspect it may be connected to your sewer line, the county recommends contacting a licensed plumber.
