The Cochrane Piranhas made waves at the ASSA Region E swim meet over the weekend, racking up a staggering 132 medals and rewriting the club record book in the process.

The two-day meet featured six clubs from Calgary and the surrounding area: the Calgary Swordfish, Calgary Tritons, Okotoks Stingrays, Didsbury Aqua Jets, High River Otters, and the Piranhas — who stole the spotlight.

On Sunday alone, Cochrane swimmers captured 28 gold, 21 silver, and 20 bronze medals, for a one-day total of 69. Over the full weekend, the team claimed 56 golds, 40 silvers, and 36 bronzes — an unprecedented total of 132 medals.

"This is an incredible accomplishment for our club," said team staff. "Our swimmers showed grit, focus, and outstanding sportsmanship across every race."

The Piranhas also shattered several long-standing club records:

  • The 14U Mixed Free Relay team of Luoying Shi, Eileen Zhang, Evan Thibodeau and Michael Peterson set a new club benchmark with a time of 1:57.75, eclipsing the previous record of 1:59.24.

  • Coach Sydney Carnegie became the first female Piranha to complete the 18+ 1500m freestyle, and demolished the 200m freestyle club record from 2012 by nearly 10 seconds.

  • Oli Johnson broke his own 50m freestyle record with a new time of 24.66, and also claimed the 100m freestyle record with a time of 54.13, a mark that had stood since 2015.

  • Eason Zhang shattered the 15–17 boys 800m freestyle club record by over two seconds.

  • Cienna Van Bruegel lowered the 11–12 girls 100m backstroke record — untouched since 2012 — to 1:18.06.

  • Isaac Thibodeau topped his own club record in the 15–17 boys 200m individual medley.

With momentum building, the Piranhas look poised for a strong showing at provincials as their record-setting summer continues.
