Dustin Friesen is back in the WHL.

The former captain of the Swift Current Broncos is now head coach of the Calgary Hitmen.

“We are excited to welcome Dustin as our new head coach,” said Hitmen General Manager Garry Davidson in a media release. “He is a proven winner at every level in his playing career and has had a direct impact on championship teams in the past two seasons.

“He has a passion to develop players and to create a strong culture. We know he will lead and guide our team and build on our progression and success from last season.”

Friesen spent four seasons and 258 games as a member of the Broncos.

He went on to play five seasons for the University of New Brunswick and eleven seasons of professional hockey in North America and Europe.

The native of Waldheim, Saskatchewan, was an assistant coach for Moose Jaw during their 2024 WHL Championship run and an associate coach with Moncton for their 2025 QMJHL Championship.

He replaces Paul McFarland, who joined the staff of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers.
