Shooting for a Cause 11 hits the field August 9 at Capture the Flag Paintball and Airsoft, just off Highway 40 near Cochrane.

The annual event combines adrenaline and altruism, raising money for Helping Families Handle Cancer, a Calgary-based charity that provides direct financial assistance to families with a child undergoing cancer treatment.

“This started as just an idea I had after seeing a paintball field down south raise some money for cancer,” says the event organizer. “I thought, ‘Why can’t we do that here?’ So I decided to make it happen.”

Since then, the event has raised more than $50,000—and it’s deeply personal.

“By year three, cancer hit home. My cousin’s nine-year-old daughter was diagnosed with AML leukemia,” he shares. “Helping Families Handle Cancer actually supported my family during that time. It really came full circle.”

This year’s event welcomes everyone from first-timers to veteran players. Entry is $30, which includes a level 3 marker rental. Paintballs are heavily discounted at $80 for 2,000 rounds.

There will also be raffles, silent auction items, a 50/50 draw, and more. One of the biggest prizes? A brand-new MACDEV Droid paintball gun, retailing at $1,200.

“This marker just came out in late June,” he says. “It’s never been used, and you can win it for just $10 a ticket—or 3 for $20.”

No preregistration required—just show up by 9 a.m. on August 9, or check out the Capture the Flag Paintball and Airsoft Facebook page under events for more details.

“It’s about having fun, but also making a difference for families going through the hardest time of their lives,” he says. “That’s what keeps us coming back year after year.”
