Nuclear energy and its place in Saskatchewan were one of the key items being discussed during the 79th Annual Midwestern Legislative Conference, taking place in Saskatoon. A panel consisting of Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel, and Westinghouse President John Gorman had some information on the current progress for nuclear development in Saskatchewan.

Currently, SaskPower is working on a site for a Small Modular Reactor for the Estevan area, though a final decision on the project would not come until around 2030.

With the conference involving multiple representatives from other provinces and US states, Premier Scott Moe addressed that energy security between friendly countries is extremely important.

"I always start my thinking from our general security, and how do you do that? You ensure that your energy is secure and you're not dependent on unallied nations or unfriendly nations around the world for your energy security, and herein lies the greatest opportunity that we have as Canadians and Americans to really determine our own future."

Gitzel added his own perspective on how important it is to have these two spheres work together.

"Out of the 11 states that are here, eight of you have nuclear power plants. You have about 24-25 per cent of the nuclear electricity, 24 plants, and we supply all of you. I checked all the contracts, and we're supplying all of you in different states with uranium from right here in Saskatchewan."

Gorman agreed and stated that the best first step is cooperation going into the future.

"Neither nation can do this alone. We have all of the tools that we need. Let's go through this incredible collaboration, coordination for economic benefit and security benefit here between Canada and the U.S., and we'll be able to dominate globally."

The conference continues today, with other topics including housing, AI, education, and agriculture.
