A new summer camp in Lacombe is offering immigrant and newcomer families in Central Alberta a chance to connect through play and community.

The Little Tykes Lacombe Summer Camp, hosted by the Central Alberta Immigrant Women’s Association (CAIWA), will run from Aug. 11 to 15. The free camp is open to children between the ages of three and 10 and will take place weekday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Campers will be at different locations each day, with activities ranging from nature walks to sports.

It’s the first time CAIWA is bringing the program to Lacombe, after previously hosting camps in Red Deer and Rimbey.

Tabitha Phiri, CAIWA’s program co-ordinator for domestic violence and self-harm prevention, says the decision to expand was driven by the growing immigrant population in the community.

“We have a lot of immigrant families now in Lacombe,” Phiri said. “We need to think outside the box and not just focus on Red Deer but go to surrounding cities in Central Alberta.”

Funding for the camp was provided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. The hope is for more camp weeks to be added in Lacombe.

Families interested in registering can contact Jorene Han at 403-307-7514.
