As Cochranites prepare to hit the road for the Heritage Day long weekend, RCMP are urging drivers to put safety first.
“Many collisions are preventable,” says Sgt. Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic. “By following safe driving practices, such as leaving early, staying alert, and driving according to conditions, we can help ensure Alberta’s roadways are safe for everyone this August long weekend.”
RCMP are reminding motorists that impaired driving can have deadly consequences.
Alcohol and drugs reduce judgment, coordination, and reaction time. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and arrange a safe ride home.
Distractions behind the wheel remain a serious risk. That includes texting, grooming, adjusting GPS, or even attending to passengers or pets.
“Any activity that takes your focus off the road can be dangerous.”
Drivers are also reminded to adjust their speed to match road and weather conditions.
Speed limits are based on ideal conditions, and summer travel can mean heavy traffic, sudden weather changes, or wildlife crossings.

Before setting out, RCMP says to be sure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up, including children in proper safety seats.
RCMP are also asking drivers to share their travel plans with friends or family before leaving.
Summer brings more cyclists, pedestrians, and off-highway vehicles. Always double-check blind spots and be mindful of others sharing the road.
“We want everyone to arrive safely,” Turnbull says. “It takes just a few smart choices to make a big difference.”
