Estevan athletes bring home bronze with Team Sask 17U Green Selects
The city of Estevan is beaming with pride as local volleyball standout Aidan Turner and his coach Bryton Such helped lead Team Sask to a bronze medal at the 2025 Canada Cup. Representing the Estevan Extreme Volleyball Club and the province on the national stage, the pair credited hard work, community support, and team chemistry as keys to their success.
Turner, who was recently named Sask Volleyball’s 16U Male Indoor Athlete of the Year, says the honour gave him added motivation heading into the tournament.
“It motivated me by keeping myself pushing to my max, even in the two weeks of training before the tournament,” said Turner. “It helped me push my team to a higher level so we could compete better at the Canada Cup.”
Coach Bryton Such, who’s been building up local volleyball talent through Estevan Extreme, said Team Sask’s preparation was as much mental as it was physical.
“There’s a huge amount of work behind the scenes, being in those high-pressure games in itself is a huge learning experience,” Such explained. “We've been really fortunate in Estevan to have played in tight matches, provincials, high school rivalries, that helped prepare the boys.”
One of the tournament’s key turning points came early in a five-set battle against Quebec, which the team used as fuel for the rest of their run.
“It really pushed us to execute at a high level,” said Such. “From that point on, the boys were fully invested, and it showed in how we played.”
Turner echoed that, saying, “We won the first set, went down two, and came back to win. After that, we really believed we could win it.”
Throughout the tournament, Turner’s role in the middle position proved pivotal.
“Our transition was definitely one of our best parts,” he said. “When you can put up a good block, it makes it easier for our defense, then we can put a ball away.”
The Estevan Extreme program has steadily built its reputation across the province for producing elite talent. Such says it's the product of deep roots and tight bonds among athletes.
“These boys have grown up playing every sport together. That chemistry is a huge asset,” he said. “We’ve also had amazing community support, whether it’s local sponsors like Durr Farms or Olympic Auto Group, or fans showing up at big games like the Co-op Challenge.”
While the bronze medal is a major milestone, Turner and Such both say it’s just a steppingstone for the future. The focus now shifts back to training, leadership, and growing the next generation.
“Winning is awesome,” Such said. “But it’s more about learning, mastering your craft, and sharing that with your teammates.”
“Even when we were down, I just tried to bring everybody up,” added Turner. “No matter the situation, just reset and go again.”
Estevan Extreme Volleyball continues to develop elite athletes and foster strong leadership skills through sport, and this Canada Cup podium finish is proof that the Southeast’s volleyball scene is thriving.
Also representing Estevan, Cameron Milbrandt competed with Sask White Selects, battling hard through close losses in pool play and securing 9th place in playoffs with a strong win over New Brunswick 17U. Sask White also picked up wins over Ontario TORP and Newfoundland 16U, but fell to their fellow Saskatchewan Green Selects in the playoff opener.
Together, Estevan’s athletes showed the strength of Southeast Saskatchewan volleyball, taking their homegrown grit and teamwork to the national stage.
