A man who allegedly fled police following a confrontation during a traffic stop has been arrested and is now facing several charges.
Lacombe police say Aaron Olson was taken into custody after a warrant was issued for his arrest earlier yesterday.
The charges stem from an incident on July 28, when officers stopped a white Dodge Ram on Highway 12 near 58 Street just before 1 a.m.
Police say Olson, who was showing signs of impairment, became combative when officers attempted to search his vehicle — which contained an open alcoholic beverage within reach.
During the encounter, Olson allegedly assaulted two officers, resisted arrest, and fled the scene in his vehicle at high speed. Police say both a conducted energy weapon and OC spray were deployed in an attempt to subdue him.
Officers from the Blackfalds, Red Deer and Ponoka RCMP detachments joined the search, and Olson's abandoned vehicle was later located in a rural area near Ponoka.
A search of the truck revealed a quantity of suspected methamphetamine.
Olson is facing seven charges, including two counts of assaulting a peace officer, two counts of resisting arrest, one count of flight from a peace officer, possession of a controlled substance and mischief under $5,000.
No further details have been released.
