The August long weekend is always one of the busiest for campgrounds across Central Alberta.

If you are heading out, here is a list of active fire bans and advisories for our area.

City of Red Deer-Fire Advisory

Until further notice:

No fire permits will be issued.

This fire restriction does not apply to:

  • outside Fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, barbecue pits, portable fire receptacles or structures on residential properties that comply with Bylaw No 3387/2007 "Fire Permit Bylaw".
  • CSA-approved or ULC-certified natural gas, propane or electric barbeques or smokers designed for cooking.
  • Gas fire pits and electric catalytic infrared-style heaters are permitted if used in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and meet the required clearance to combustibles.
  • Pellet grills and smokers with an on/off switch that controls the fuel source are permitted

Ponoka County-Fire Advisory

The Fire Advisory remains in effect for the response area covered by Ponoka County Regional Fire Services response area (Ponoka County, Town of Ponoka, Town of Rimbey and Summer Village of Parkland Beach). 

Under the fire advisory, open burn and fireworks discharge permit will be approved on a case-by-case basis only.    Some rain has been experienced in the County but not consistent throughout. Residents are encouraged to refrain from non-essential burning or activities which may result in a fire (eg. fireworks / exploding targets).   

The use of the following is not affected:

  • Backyard fire pit and burning barrel (with a mesh screen and attended at all times)  
  • Incinerators (for farm & acreage use),
  • BBQs (propane/charcoal briquette) and smokers.
  • Gas and liquid powered appliances (eg stoves, lanterns and propane fire rings)

County of Stettler-Fire Advisory

There are limitations on burning at this time.  Please consider the following: 

  • New permits will be issued for a limited 5-day period for small brush piles. Windrows and large brush piles remain prohibited.
  • Allows essential burning in burning barrels that are constructed of non-combustible material that have a tight-fitting metal mesh screen with openings not larger than 13 mm.
  • Allows backyard fire pits, and safe wood campfires contained by non-combustible material with a metal mesh screen with openings no larger than 13 mm. Portable propane fire pits, gas or propane stoves and barbecues.

Before lighting any fires, always make sure it is safe to do so, and ensure your fire is completely extinguished before leaving the campsite.
