The long weekend is here, and many people may be considering camping with one of the final long weekends of the camping season over the next few days. For the southeast, the Moose Mountain Provincial Park is getting ready to host a lot of campers over the next few days.

Ainsley Sauter, the acting park manager, says they've been working to get the park ready for an important long weekend.

"Things are looking good here. The August long weekend is usually our biggest weekend, the busiest camping weekend here for the summer. We're pretty full at 98% capacity this weekend, but we're still open for day visitors."

The weekend will be a busy one with a number of events being hosted through the weekend, says Sauter.

"We have some programming going on this weekend. Interpreters have a few things going on. They've got some geocaching and a geocaching gnome hunt, and family game night on Friday. On Saturday, there's a sunset paddle and some night caching."

"Sunday, August 3rd, is Cannington Manor's Fair Day, where history comes to life at Cannington Manor Provincial Park. It's just a short drive away from Moose Mountain, and it's a great day to learn some history and have some homemade ice cream, hand-churned ice cream. I think there's a petting zoo out there. So it should be a good day."

"On Monday, there's a cloud exploring and bird hunting program as well here at the park. So we've got lots going on for visitors."

July has brought some moisture to the southeast, but for Moose Mountain, they've been able to keep the campgrounds in good condition.

"It's been a little bit slower occupancy, I would say, just because of the weather. But overall, weekends have still been very busy. So it hasn't really been affecting us that much. The last couple of weekends have been hot. So that's nice to see lots of people out on the beach and using the day use areas."

With just one more long weekend left for the camping season at the start of September, Saunter is looking back on what she says has been a great camping season.

"It's been a good, good summer overall. Yeah, other than the weather could be a little bit nicer. But other than that, our campgrounds have been full, and yeah, everything's been going pretty smoothly."

Saunter says anyone looking for more information on camping at provincial parks this weekend can visit saskparks.com for infromation on weekend programming and where to stay through the weekend.
