With the Heritage Day long weekend approaching, Central Alberta RCMP is reminding drivers to plan ahead, stay alert, and drive responsibly to help ensure a safe journey for all road users.
Motorists are encouraged to keep the following safety tips in mind:
-
Do not drive impaired: Alcohol and drugs can impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time. Always arrange a safe ride home. Impaired driving is not just a legal issue—it’s a matter of life and death.
-
Avoid distractions: Distracted driving goes beyond texting or talking on the phone. It includes personal grooming, reading, adjusting audio or GPS devices, and interacting with passengers or pets.
-
Drive according to conditions: Speed limits apply in ideal conditions. Adjust your speed to account for road, traffic, and weather conditions.
-
Buckle up: Ensure all passengers are secured with seatbelts or appropriate child safety seats before starting your trip.
-
Watch for other road users: Summer brings more cyclists, pedestrians, and off-highway vehicles. Always check blind spots and share the road.
-
Share your plans: Let family or friends know your route and expected arrival time before heading out.
“Many collisions are preventable,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic. “By following safe driving practices, such as leaving early, staying alert, and driving according to conditions, we can help ensure Alberta’s roadways are safe for everyone this August long weekend.”
