Cochrane is on the menu this August as Alberta on the Plate, a 10-day, province-wide dine-around festival, returns to celebrate the best of Alberta-grown, raised, and crafted food.
From Peace River to Lethbridge—and Cochrane—over 100 restaurants are creating special menus that highlight local ingredients.
One of the most unique dishes this year? Alberta-raised yak.
“We’ve got a great three-course menu at Aama,” says Rheannon Green with the festival. “It starts with yak momos, followed by a yak steak, and ends with a Himalayan lava cake for dessert. You can even pair it with a local gin cocktail or a great IPA.”
While many people are surprised to learn that yak is raised in Alberta, the organizer says it’s gaining momentum. “It tastes a lot like beef, just a little sweeter and richer. And that’s what Alberta on the Plate is all about—showcasing the incredible range of food being produced right here in our province.”

The festival runs in conjunction with Alberta Local Food Week and Alberta Open Farm Days, encouraging people to not only taste local ingredients at restaurants, but also to meet the farmers and producers behind them.
“Foodies, this is your sign to hit the road,” they added. “No matter where you go in Alberta, there’s likely a participating restaurant nearby serving up something special.”
And yes—there’s one more bonus. “Calories don’t count during Alberta on the Plate,” Rheannon joked. “So go wild and enjoy it all.”
