Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a special weather statement for Southwest Saskatchewan on Saturday advising of the potential for funnel clouds to form throughout the day.
The advisory affects the city of Swift Current as well as the towns of Shaunavon, Eastend, Maple Creek, Val Marie, Leader, Gull Lake, Cabri, Kyle, Herbert and surrounding areas.
The weather agency says conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. Although these funnel clouds are normally not dangerous, they could develop into weak landspout tornadoes that can be strong enough to cause damage on the ground.
Weather watches and warnings will be issued if conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes.
Residents are being asked to treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously and prepare to take shelter if one does develop.
