Neighbourhood nuisance no more: Derelict house demolished in downtown Red Deer. Erin Sinclair

Categories

A derelict house that sat vacant for more than 19 years in downtown Red Deer has finally been torn down.

Located at 4602 48th Ave., the property had long been a source of frustration and concern for the community.

Over the years, it became a hotspot for squatting, frequent evening foot traffic in and out, and ongoing safety issues.

The home was repeatedly tagged with graffiti, surrounded by overgrown trees and shrubs, and even caught fire earlier this year.

Although the windows and doors were boarded up within the past two years, nearby residents continued to question when real action would be taken.

In the past year, some progress was made trees and bushes were cleared, and the garage was recently removed.

But today (August 2), a small private crew arrived and, over the course of the day, demolished the house entirely.

What remains now is an empty lot, a long-awaited change for neighbours who watched the property deteriorate over nearly two decades.
