The Abbey Centre in Blackfalds has launched a new initiative aimed at creating a more inclusive and supportive experience for individuals with sensory needs.
At the end of June three sensory backpacks, two youth-sized and one adult, were made available free of charge for guests to sign out during their visit.
While open to anyone, the backpacks are specifically designed to assist individuals with sensory processing disabilities, sensory sensitivities, or other related needs.
“Public spaces can sometimes feel overwhelming,” said a representative from the Abbey Centre.
“This is especially true for people who experience challenges in filtering external stimuli like bright lights, loud noises, or crowded areas.”
Each backpack contains a range of tools to help users regulate their sensory input:
-
To reduce input: sunglasses and noise-cancelling headphones
-
To increase input: fidget toys and sensory board books (youth)
-
For communication and self-regulation: communication cards
The sensory backpacks are available for use throughout the duration of a guest's visit but must remain within the facility.
They are available to all ages but must be signed in and out at Guest Services by individuals aged 13 or older who meet equipment sign-out requirements.
This effort is part of the Abbey Centre’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and supporting the diverse needs of its community members.
