It's going to be a wet weekend in the area

It’s shaping up to be a weekend of umbrellas, raincoats and rubber boots in Saskatchewan, including the Humboldt area.

Rain is in the forecast again this weekend, continuing the week’s trend.

Christy Climenhaga a Scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada says a low-pressure system is moving across the province accompanied by some heavy rainfall beginning on Friday and lasting until Sunday morning.

She added the heaviest rainfall will occur in the Melfort region, stretching as far west to Prince Albert and east towards Hudson Bay. Lake Lenore is on the edge of the rainfall warning that’s been issued.

That area could see as much as 50-75 mm of rainfall over the next couple of days, while the Humboldt region could see 30-40 mm of precipitation but there is potential for additional rain depending on where the heavy band sets up.

Beginning Friday night, the rainfall will be more consistent according to Climenhaga.

“If you're in that heavier band of rain for tonight and then starting to kind of ease up tomorrow night. So, it really depends on the track of that low.”

An Air Quality Warning has been issued as the smoke flows in from the northern wildfires. Climenhaga noted that on Saturday, the smoke will be prominent in the western portion of the province.

She cautioned that the smoke could remain visible in the Humboldt region.

“Through the weekend it is possible to get rain and smoke at the same time. It really depends on the concentration of the smoke and how heavy that rain is. But hopefully that rain will help wash things out a little bit, but it's something to think about through the weekend. The air quality may still be a little bit on the lower side.”

There is some light at the end of the tunnel, or in this case, sunshine. It appears the end of the weekend will have some sunshine.

“We are in a little bit of an unsettled pattern. We might see some more showers on and off, but towards the end of the week and start of next week, hopefully get some breaks of sunshine temperatures pretty close to seasonal in the mid 20s.”

Even if the rainfall warning isn’t expected for Humboldt, with it being close to the region, Climenhaga advises to keep an eye out for watches and warnings and to plan accordingly should the forecast take a turn for the worst.
